O stradă din capitala Franței va purta începând de luna viitoare numele Reginei Maria a României, în semn de omagiu față de rolul și implicarea în Conferința de Pace de la Paris ce a urmat Primului Război Mondial, care a debutat în urmă cu un secol.

Conferința de Pace de la Paris a început la 18 ianuarie 1919 și a durat până la 21 ianuarie 2020, având drept obiectiv edificarea unei noi ordini și configurații politico-teritoriale în Europași rezolvarea complicatelor probleme economico-financiare rezultate din Primul Război Mondial. Au participat 27 de state, printre care și România.
Cunoscută drept ”sistemul de tratate de la Versailles”, Conferința s-a încheiat cu semnarea a cinci tratate cu puterile beligerante (Versailles, Saint Germain, Neuille sur Seine, Trianon și Sevres). Dintre acestea, prin Tratatul de la Trianon din 4 iunie 1920, Ungaria recunoștea realitățile rezultate în urma războiului, inclusiv unirea Transilvaniei, Banatului și Maramureșului cu Regatul României.
Potrivit Familiei Regale a României, la 5 martie 1919, Regina Maria a început, la Paris, o vizită care a rămâs în istoria modernă a ţării noastre. Vizita la Paris a avut loc în prezența prim-ministrului român Ionel Brătianu și a jucat un rol important în favoarea României la Conferinţa de Pace de la Paris (18 ianuarie 1919 – 21 ianuarie 1920).
Vizita la Paris a durat din 5 până în 12 martie 2019. Ulterior, Regina Maria a revenit la Paris, după un alt sejur european, între 30 martie și 16 aprilie 1919.
Întâlnirile Reginei Maria cu președintele francez Raymond Poincaré și cu prim-ministrul Georges Clemenceau au rămas în istorie, iar astăzi se vorbește despre ele în societatea românească drept momente legendare ale diplomației românești, în general, și ale diplomației regale, în special.
Academia de Arte Frumoase a organizat o sesiune solemnă în onoarea reginei, care a fost membru al reputatului for științific și artistic. Ea a întâlnit comunitatea românească din Franța, a fost oaspete de onoare al Operei Garnier și al Comediei Franceze, a luat prânzul cu ministrul Afacerilor Externe Stephen Pichon la Quai d’Orsay, a participat la o slujbă la Catedrala Notre Dame în memoria celor căzuți în Primul Război Mondial și s-a întâlnit cu Președintele Statelor Unite ale Americii Woodrow Wilson.
Regina Maria a fost distinsă, cu ocazia vizitei, cu Marele Cordon al Legiunii de Onoare a Republicii Franceze.
